How to get an alert when a product is back in stock
The thing you want is sold out, and the shop's “notify me” button either doesn't exist or never seems to email you. Here's how back-in-stock alerts work, why they sometimes fail, and how to set up one you can rely on.
Start with the shop's own alert
Many shops have a “notify me when available” button. Use it, it's free. Just don't rely on it alone. Some shops send these emails in batches, some only send them for certain sizes, and some emails land in spam.
Why watching the page works
When a product comes back, the page changes. The button switches from “Sold out” to “Add to basket”, a stock count appears, or a size becomes selectable. A change monitor notices that change and tells you, whatever the shop's own system does.
How to set it up well
- Use the product's own page, not a search results page.
- If you can, watch just the section with the buy button or stock message, so price tweaks elsewhere don't trigger alerts.
- Choose a frequency that matches how fast it sells out. Popular items may need checking every 15 minutes; most things are fine a few times a day.
- Check your alert email is going to your main inbox, not a promotions tab.
What it can't do
Page monitoring can't reserve the item for you, and it won't see stock that's only visible after logging in. For very limited drops that sell out in seconds, no alert is fast enough to guarantee you get one.
Tips that help you actually get it
- Start watching as soon as it sells out.
- Save your address and payment details with the shop in advance.
- Make sure alert emails reach your main inbox and that phone notifications are on.
- For items in several sizes or colours, watch the part of the page for the one you want.
- Follow the shop's social accounts too; restocks are sometimes announced there first.
Beyond shopping
The same approach works for anything where availability shows up on a public page: event tickets released in batches, course places, public appointment slots and limited editions.
How ChangeGist handles it
Paste the product link, open Advanced options if you want to watch just the buy button, and pick how often to check. When the button or stock message changes, you get an email that says what changed, such as “Button changed: Sold out → Add to basket”.
Be considerate
Only watch public pages, keep checks at a reasonable pace, and remember that some big marketplaces limit automated visits in their terms.
