Getting started

How do I add my first page?

Copy the web address of the page you care about, paste it into the box on your dashboard and press the button to start watching. ChangeGist takes a first copy of the page straight away, then checks it again on your plan's schedule.

When something important changes, you get an email with a short plain-English summary: a headline, a few bullet points, and the old and new values where that helps. You can see every change later in the page's full history.

It works with any public page that doesn't need a login. Pages that build themselves with JavaScript are loaded in a real browser, so they work too.

How often are my pages checked?

It depends on your plan:

  • Free trial: up to 5 pages, checked every hour.
  • Starter: 10 pages, checked every hour.
  • Plus: 50 pages, checked every 15 minutes.
  • Pro: 100 pages, checked every 15 minutes.
  • Business: 500 pages, with up to 100 of them checked every 5 minutes.

Big marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon, Vinted, Etsy and Steam are the exception. They're checked gently, at most once a day, so we stay on good terms with those sites.

How do I write an alert rule?

An alert rule tells ChangeGist which changes you actually want to hear about. You write it in your own words, the same way you'd ask a colleague to keep an eye on something.

A few examples:

  • Only tell me when the price drops below £20.
  • Let me know if they add a new job in Manchester.
  • Tell me when the closing date changes.
  • Ignore changes to the reviews section.

Changes that don't match your rule are still saved in the page's history, so you can look back at them any time. You just won't get an alert for them.

What are starter packs?

Starter packs are a quick way to get going if you're not sure what to watch. Pick one and it sets up 3 pages with sensible alert rules already written for you.

There are packs for:

  • Online sellers
  • Job hunters
  • Rules and terms
  • Investor relations
  • Savings and mortgage rates
  • Resellers and deal hunters
  • Tenders and grants

You can change the pages and rules afterwards, just like any page you add yourself.

Can I watch just part of a page?

Yes. When you add a page, open More options and enter a CSS selector for the part you care about, such as the price box or a table of dates. ChangeGist will then ignore everything else on the page.

This is handy for busy pages where the sidebar, adverts or related products change all the time. If you're not sure what a CSS selector is, an alert rule in your own words (for example, "only tell me about changes to the opening hours") often does the same job.

Can I watch a whole competitor at once?

Yes. Type in a competitor's domain, such as example.com, and ChangeGist looks for the pages that usually matter most: pricing, products, terms, careers and news.

You choose which of the pages it finds you'd like to watch. Each one counts towards your plan's page limit, the same as a page you add by hand. You can add alert rules to each one afterwards, so you only hear about the changes that matter to you.

Alerts & notifications

How do I change my email settings or set quiet hours?

Go to Account → Notifications and open "How we tell you about changes". You can choose to get an email for every important change as it happens, or only the Monday summary.

Undercut alerts from Price check always come straight away, whichever option you pick.

Quiet hours keep your phone silent between two times you choose, for example 22:00 to 07:00. The times are UK time. Emails still arrive during quiet hours, so you won't miss anything.

Can I get alerts on my phone or computer?

Yes. Go to Account → Notifications, find "Alerts on your phone" and tap "Turn on alerts on this device". You can send yourself a test notification to check it works. Do this on each phone or computer you want alerts on.

On an iPhone or iPad, add ChangeGist to your home screen first: open changegist.com in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Open ChangeGist from there and turn alerts on. Apple only allows this for sites added to the home screen (iOS 16.4 or later).

You can choose to get every important change, only price alerts, or nothing.

Can alerts go to Slack, Microsoft Teams or Discord?

Yes, on the Pro and Business plans. Go to Account → Notifications and open "Slack, Teams, Discord and webhooks" to connect where you'd like alerts to go.

If you use another tool, a webhook sends each change to a web address of your choice, so you can pass it on to almost anything.

Email alerts carry on as normal alongside these, unless you change your email settings.

How does the calendar and reminders feature work?

We call it "Never miss a date". When a change on one of your pages includes a deadline or a start date, such as a closing date for a grant or the date new terms begin, ChangeGist adds it to your own private calendar feed.

To use it, go to Account → Notifications → Your ChangeGist calendar and add the feed to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook. New dates then appear there by themselves.

You'll also get reminder emails 3 days and 1 day before each date.

Keep the feed's link to yourself, as anyone with it can see your dates.

What is the weekly summary email?

Every Monday we send a short email rounding up what changed on your pages over the past week. It's a good way to catch up if you'd rather not read every alert as it comes in.

If you'd like only the summary and no individual emails, go to Account → Notifications and choose "Only the Monday summary".

To turn the weekly summary off, go to Account → Notifications → Emails from us and untick it. Alerts about your pages and important account emails are always sent.

Pages & changes

Why didn't I get an alert for a change?

ChangeGist filters out noise so your inbox doesn't fill up with things that don't matter. It ignores changes such as:

  • Today's date or a "last updated" time
  • Visitor counters and view counts
  • Rotating banners and adverts

If you've written an alert rule, changes that don't match it won't send an alert either.

Either way, the change is still saved, so you can see it in the page's history. If you think something important was missed, email [email protected] with the page and we'll take a look.

What if a page won't load or can't be watched?

A few things can stop a page from being watched:

  • It needs a login. For now ChangeGist can only watch public pages.
  • It's a file download, such as a PDF or a zip file, rather than a web page.
  • It's a known malware or phishing site. We refuse these to keep everyone safe.
  • The site is down, or is blocking automated visits.

Pages that rely on JavaScript are loaded in a real browser, so they usually work fine. If a public page still won't load, email [email protected] with the address and we'll look into it.

Why are eBay, Amazon and similar sites checked less often?

Big marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon, Vinted, Etsy and Steam don't like being visited often by automated tools. To stay on good terms with them, ChangeGist checks those pages gently, at most once a day, whatever your plan.

You can watch up to 3 marketplace pages per account.

If you need faster alerts from one of these sites, many of them send their own emails, for example saved search or price drop emails. You can forward those to ChangeGist and they'll turn into alerts (see "Can ChangeGist read emails from other sites?").

Can ChangeGist read emails from other sites?

Yes. Go to Account → Connections → Email alerts from other sites to get your own private ChangeGist email address.

Forward a site's own emails to that address, such as job alerts, saved searches or account notices, and they become ChangeGist alerts with the same plain-English summary. You can see everything that's arrived on your inbox page at /inbox.

Most email programs let you set up a rule to forward certain emails automatically, so you only need to set it up once. Keep the address private, as anything sent to it shows up in your account.

How do I pause or delete a page?

On your dashboard, click the ⋯ menu on the page's row and choose Delete. Or open the page and use the Delete button there.

We'll ask you to confirm first, and offer Pause instead. Pausing stops the checks but keeps the page and its history, so you can pick up where you left off later. Deleting removes the page and its history for good.

Deleting a page frees up room on your plan for another one.

Can I export my changes?

Yes. Go to Account → Your data and download your changes as a CSV file. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or any other spreadsheet program.

It's useful for keeping your own records, sharing a list of changes with someone who doesn't use ChangeGist, or doing your own analysis.

On the Pro and Business plans you can also get a monthly report with a PDF. Turn it on in Account → Notifications → Emails from us.

Price check

How does Price check work?

Price check is for anyone who sells something and wants to know what competitors charge.

Enter your own price for a product, then add the competitor pages that sell the same thing. ChangeGist keeps an eye on their prices and compares them with yours.

Each competitor page counts towards your plan's page limit. Big marketplaces such as eBay and Amazon are checked at most once a day, and you can watch up to 3 of them per account.

What is an undercut alert?

If a competitor's price drops below yours, ChangeGist sends you an undercut alert, so you can decide whether to respond.

Undercut alerts always come straight away, even if you've chosen to get only the Monday summary for other changes.

On your phone, you can choose to get only price alerts and nothing else. Go to Account → Notifications and pick "Only price alerts" under phone and desktop notifications.

If you change your own price, update it in Price check so the comparison stays right.

Can I see how prices have changed over time?

Yes. Price check draws a chart for each product showing your price alongside your competitors' prices over time.

It's a simple way to spot patterns, such as a rival who always cuts prices at the end of the month, or one who has quietly been creeping up.

If you just want to follow one product without an account, try our free price tracker at /price-tracker. It checks one product once a day and emails you when the price changes.

Plans & billing

How does the free trial work?

The free trial lasts 7 days and you don't need a card to start. You can watch up to 5 pages, each checked every hour, and try the main features: plain-English summaries, alert rules, the change history and more.

When the trial ends, pick a plan to keep your pages being checked. If you decide it's not for you, just don't pick a plan. You won't be charged, as we never asked for a card.

There are also two free tools you can use without an account: /what-changed and /price-tracker.

What plans are there?

All plans are monthly, with a yearly option.

  • Starter, £9 a month: 10 pages, checked every hour.
  • Plus, £19 a month: 50 pages, checked every 15 minutes.
  • Pro, £39 a month: 100 pages, checked every 15 minutes, alerts to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord or a webhook, 2 colleagues and a monthly PDF report.
  • Business, £149 a month: 500 pages, checked every 5 minutes on up to 100 of them, premium AI summaries and 10 colleagues.

Prices are also available in US dollars ($12, $24, $49, $179) and euros (€11, €22, €45, €169).

Is there a discount for paying yearly?

Yes. If you pay yearly, you get 12 months for the price of 10, so two months are free.

For example, Starter is £90 a year instead of £108, and Plus is £190 a year instead of £228.

The same applies to Pro (£390 a year) and Business (£1,490 a year), and to dollar and euro prices too. You can choose yearly when you pick a plan.

What is the founding offer?

As a thank you to our earliest customers, the first 100 people to subscribe get 20% off their first 3 months.

The offer ends when 100 customers have used it, or on 31 January 2027, whichever comes first. After the first 3 months, you pay your plan's normal price.

It works on any plan. If you're on the free trial and like what you see, picking a plan before the offer runs out is the way to get it.

How do I change or cancel my plan?

Go to the Billing page and click Manage subscription. From there you can change plan, update your card or download invoices. Payments are handled securely by Stripe.

Not sure which plan suits you? See "What plans are there?" for what each one includes.

To cancel, use the Cancel subscription link on the same page. If you have any questions about your bill, email [email protected].

Can I get a refund?

We don't offer automatic refunds, but if something has gone wrong, please get in touch at [email protected] and tell us what happened. ChangeGist is run by one person in the UK, and every email is read and answered.

If you're not sure ChangeGist is right for you, the 7-day free trial needs no card, so you can try it properly before paying anything.

Account & security

How do I change or reset my password?

To change it, go to Account → Profile & security → Password. Enter your current password, then your new one twice. Changing your password logs you out on every other device.

If you've forgotten it, click "Forgot password" on the login page and we'll email you a link to set a new one.

Use a password you don't use anywhere else. A password manager makes this easy.

How do I turn on two-factor login?

Two-factor login means a stolen password isn't enough for someone to get into your account. As well as your password, you'll type a 6-digit code from your phone when you log in.

Go to Account → Profile & security → Two-factor login. Open an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy or 1Password, scan the code on screen and enter the 6-digit code it shows.

To turn it off later, you'll need your password and a current code.

Can I add colleagues to my account?

Yes, on the Pro and Business plans. Pro includes 2 colleagues and Business includes 10.

Go to Account → Connections → Team and invite people by email. They'll get a link to join, and can then see your pages and changes without sharing your login.

If you're on Starter or Plus and need a colleague to see alerts, you could forward the emails, or move up to Pro from the Billing page.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Account → Your data → Delete account and type your password to confirm.

This permanently deletes your account, your pages and their history, and cancels your subscription if you have one. It can't be undone.

If you'd like a copy of your changes first, download them as a CSV from the same page before you delete.

If you're just taking a break, you could pause your pages or cancel your plan instead.

What do you do with my data?

ChangeGist is run from the UK and follows UK data protection law.

  • Your data is never sold or shared.
  • It's not used to train AI.
  • You can download your changes at any time from Account → Your data.
  • You can delete your account and everything in it whenever you like.

Our privacy policy has the full details. If you have a question about your data, email [email protected].
